Gassed by John Singer Sargent (1919)
PAINTING ANALYSIS:
I see on the far side some huts and people standing on the back and the soldiers in the middle are going. In the middle there are soldiers standing with there eyes covered and more soldiers are standing on the bottom right corner. On the ground in both sides left and right are what looks like as dead soldiers with there eyes covered. The focus of the painting in the foreground are the soldiers that have their eyes covered and some look dead, the focus of the painting in the background are the huts and the people that are watching the soldiers go home. My eyes take me to the soldiers standing in the middle with their eyes covered and their heads facing down as they go home. The artist uses mostly light colors in the painting and the painting has no symbols. The feelings and emotions I get when I see this Painting is sadness because there are some body's on the ground that are dead and some that are alive. The overall mood of the Painting is sadness because of the soldiers on the ground and happiness because the war ended and the soldiers are going home and some of the soldiers have been gassed.
